Lia Perin, Partner at Taylor Hampton and lawyer for a number of Married At First Sight UK participants, has been quoted by BBC News today in its report on how the show’s cast have reacted to Channel 4’s decision to cancel the programme.
The article, “Relief, tears and sadness: Married at First Sight UK cast react to show being axed”, by BBC Culture Correspondent Noor Nanji, follows the publication on Thursday of a summary of findings from Channel 4’s external review into contributor welfare on the show, and the broadcaster’s announcement that MAFS UK will not return. The review was commissioned after a BBC Panorama investigation in May revealed rape allegations from two female cast members, while a third woman alleged a non-consensual sex act. The men involved have denied all the allegations against them.
Several former cast members told the BBC that, while they welcomed the decision, it did not go far enough and they wanted accountability. Lia Perin echoed those concerns:
“Cancelling the show may prevent future harm, but it does not resolve questions about the treatment of previous contestants.”
“Channel 4 owes them answers, not simply assurances that lessons have been learned.”
As the BBC notes, only a summary of findings from the review has been released rather than the full report, an Ofcom investigation into the programme remains ongoing, and Channel 4 executives are due to appear before the Culture, Media and Sport Committee on 17 November.
