Channel 4 Finally Publishes Summary of Findings of External Review into Married At First Sight UK

Published November 5, 2026By Taylor Hampton Solicitors

Channel 4 today announced that Married At First Sight UK will be cancelled following an external review into contributor welfare.

A summary of findings and recommendations on MAFS UK was published this morning, following the commission of an external review back in April 2026 by Channel 4 concerning extremely serious allegations from former contributors, which included sexual misconduct and rape.

The review comprised two parts: an investigation by law firm Clyde & Co into the programme’s welfare protocols and how CPL Productions and Channel 4 handled welfare concerns, and secondly, a review of current MAFS UK protocols by BBC One Controller Lorraine Heggessey to see if any changes should be made to current protocols to strengthen welfare. This review found multiple areas where the contributor welfare framework could be strengthened and found a number of instances where the show’s protocols had not been fully applied.

The findings of the external review

The Clyde & Co review found that, although the programme’s contributor welfare framework had not on the balance of probabilities breached the Ofcom Broadcasting Code, it could be strengthened. It identified several instances in which protocols had not been fully applied and found that CPL Productions and Channel 4 could have better understood contributors’ welfare needs throughout the series and responded more effectively to specific incidents.

The Heggessey review examined welfare protocols across series 3–6 of MAFS UK. It found that certain aspects of the current format added complexity by heightening tension or conflict and increased the programme’s risk profile. It also found that production’s management of contributors’ daily lives and contact with family and friends could cause them to lose touch with reality, potentially affecting their decision-making.

The review outlined key recommendations in relation to the format of the show and the welfare framework. These suggestions include changes with a view to reducing the emphasis on intimacy, such as placing couples in separate bedrooms in the early stages on the show, reviewing the frequency at which the couples are asked about the physical aspect of their relationship as well as removing Intimacy and Partner Swap Weeks. The review also recommended exploring ways in which the contributors could be encouraged to keep in contact with their friends and families outside the show during production.

The welfare framework recommendations also included the installation of CCTV and sound recording equipment which would be monitored 24/7, utilising safe words and panic buttons, as well as providing lockable bedrooms and bathrooms with an extra bolt inside. The review also outlined staffing recommendations around the welfare team and psychologists, as well as expanding training on consent.

Series 6 of MAFS UK, which had already been filmed and was in production, will now not be broadcast. In addition, the previous seasons of the show were removed from Channel 4’s streaming platforms prior to the broadcast of the BBC Panorama investigation.
