  2. Former Coronation Street actress Shobna Gulati;
  3. Former film producer Robert Ashworth.

Daniel Taylor of Taylor Hampton solicitors said:

Today’s judgment represents a milestone in the development of privacy law in the UK and the awarding of six figure damages is truly historic and unparalleled, on a scale much greater than has ever been awarded previously.

The length, degree and frequency of MGN’s unlawful conduct within its three national titles explains why the damages “are so much greater than historical awards”, arising out of the seriousness and prolonged nature of the hacking, which in some cases was over a period of many years. They reflect the fact that none of the articles would have been published had it not been for the underlying prolonged phone hacking that went on “which was known to be wrongful”.

The ruling makes clear that “people whose voicemails were hacked for so often and so long, had very significant parts of their private lives exposed, and then reported on, are entitled to significant compensation”.
